Who's Got Next? Future Leaders of America -- (nonfiction), sample page:
Sixteen-year-old Chris Forsell was standing in front of South Burlington High School with his friends, talking and laughing. School had just let out and everybody was hanging around, making plans for the weekend. Chris looked over at his buddy, Trevor, and said, “Dude, I’m learning this new song on guitar. Have you ever heard of . . .”
In the middle of this sentence, Chris’ pager began to beep. It caught him by surprise because it was the first time the special pager had ever gone off. It was from the firehouse! Chris practically jumped out of his shoes. “I have to get over to the fire station right away,” he said.
The guys all looked at Chris with respect. “Be careful, man,” Trevor said, slapping five with his friend. Chris, trying to contain his excitement, hurriedly gathered his backpack and cell phone. In a flash, he was off.
By the time Chris got to the fire station, the trucks were already being loaded. He geared up, a task that was suddenly more difficult now that he was under pressure to act quickly. Gearing up means changing into a firefighter’s uniform. Chris took a deep breath, trying to get his nerves under control. His heart was racing and his palms were sweaty. After putting on his bunker pants and boots, Chris grabbed his heavy fire coat and yellow helmet. He was ready to roll.
