You could hardly blame me for being intrigued when I saw the following quote from coach extraordinaire Brad Gilbert: "As a player, coach, and dad, I highly recommend 'The Kid from Courage' for the junior player in your family.'" Wow, quite a compliment coming from Andy Roddick's renowned coach. Naturally, I had to give this fictional junior tennis book a chance, and I'm very glad I did. It wasn't long before I became absorbed in this appealing, well-crafted story about overcoming obstacles, beating the odds, and reaping the rewards of hard work. The Kid from Courage is an absolute must-read for parents, juniors, coaches, and teaching pros.
Bryan Berry is a bright, engaging fifteen-year-old junior player who dreams of tennis stardom. Determined to gain the invaluable experience associated with competing at the national level, he sets his sights on the legendary Super National Championships at Kalamazoo. But mired in relative mediocrity in his small town of Courage, Kansas, Kalamazoo seems a long way off. Enter Henry Johnson, an endearing and inspirational old tennis coach. When the two join forces, so begins a heartwarming friendship and a dynamic partnership reminiscent of Rocky and the Karate Kid. And by the time Bryan inevitably faces the ultimate challenge at the venerable Super National Championships, tennis fans young and old will be rooting enthusiastically for this remarkable young superstar.
The book is available for purchase online and for every book sold Scobre Press is generously donating a portion of the proceeds back to the USTA Southern Section. So when you buy a copy, you are not only getting a terrific tennis book that the whole family will enjoy, but you're also helping the USTA Southern Section!
